  1.   For each session you will need to set communication and
  2. terminal settings. Vcomm fills in the defaults for most of the
  3. parameters.

  5.   Communication settings are the most important.
  6. You will need to know what comm port your modem is
  7. attached to. Vcomm defaults to com1. Another inportant
  8. setting is the baud-rate. This selects the speed that the
  9. computer 'talks' to your modem. This is NOT the actual line
  10. speed. For a 2400 baud modem its fine to set this to 9600.
  11. For a 14.4 modem you should set this to 38400. And for
  12. a 28.8 modem 57600 or higher is fine.

  14.   You should be aware of a potential problem with setting
  15. the baud-rate too high. If you are running an external modem,
  16. be sure that you have a 16550 UART chip. Run 'MSD' from
  17. the Dos prompt to find out what UART chip you have. If MSD
  18. reports an 8250 then your in trouble. With that you will
  19. experience comm errors above 19200. What I suggest is buy
  20. a new UART or IDE controller card that comes with a 16550.
  21. I can't speak for where you live but here a person can buy
  22. an enhanced IDE controller with two 16550 com ports and
  23. a high speed game adapter for about $25.

  25.   Most of the other comm settings should be fine by default.
  26. Most BBS systems run on 8 data bits, no parity, and one stop
  27. bit.

  29.   You should also set your upload and download paths. These
  30. are the paths that Vcomm will look for files to upload and
  31. place files after downloading them.
